UK Introduces New Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) System
The United Kingdom has announced the introduction of a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which will require all non-visa nationals to obtain pre-travel authorisation before visiting the UK. The ETA system is similar to the US ESTA system and the EU ETIAS system, and it is designed to strengthen border controls and improve security.
The ETA system will be rolled out in several phases, beginning with nationals of Qatar on November 15, 2023. The scheme will then be extended to other Gulf Cooperation Council states (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain) and Jordan in February 2024. The UK government plans to expand the scheme further, covering additional countries, with the goal of full operationalization by the end of 2024.
To apply for an ETA, eligible travelers must complete an online application form and pay a £10 fee. The application process is expected to be straightforward and efficient, requiring personal details, travel information, and responses to suitability questions, including criminal and immigration history.
Once granted, an ETA will remain valid for two years or until the expiration of the traveler’s passport, whichever comes first. Travelers with multiple nationalities or passports must ensure that their ETA is linked to the document they intend to use for travel. If a new passport is obtained, a new ETA application will be necessary.
Carriers, such as airlines and ferry companies, will be responsible for verifying travelers’ ETA permissions before allowing them to embark on their journey to the UK. It is advisable for travelers to carry digital or printed evidence of their successful ETA application when boarding.
In the event of an ETA application refusal, the traveler must apply for and obtain a visit visa before traveling to the UK. This alternative process is more time-consuming, expensive, and requires document submissions with longer processing times. Visa applications following an ETA refusal are likely to undergo greater scrutiny.
The introduction of the ETA system is a significant development for international travel to the UK. Travelers should familiarize themselves with the ETA system and ensure compliance to avoid penalties and disruptions.
